Tonya Osborn, a Dove House Peer Recovery Support Specialist, is now a Certified Addiction Peer Recovery Coach II (CAPRC II). Getting this certification is no easy feat and we are so lucky to have someone working at Dove House with this extensive experience and dedication. Tonya started working here earlier this year and came to us with Peer Recovery Training, Professionalism Training and Ethics Training already under her belt.
As a CAPRC II the requirements are as follows:
- Peer Recovery Training – 40 hours (CCAR)
- Professionalism Training – 16 hours (CCAR)
- Ethics Training – 16 hours (MHIA)
- HIV Education – 6 Hours (NAADAC)
- 500 hours of documented service with clients
- 25 hours of supervision with a licensed addiction counselor
- 2 years of recovery time
- Lived experience
In addition to these requirements, Tonya also obtained training through MHIA for Motivational Interviewing which is a client-centered method for helping people explore and resolve their ambivalence to change. It is especially effective for engaging and retaining individuals in treatment for substance abuse.
As a person in long-term recovery, Tonya said that the most pivotal moment in her recovery was working with someone who was familiar first-hand with the barriers, stigma and challenges that so many face when already dealing with so much by just trying to make the choice of no longer using drugs or alcohol. She gets to be that inspirational person for the women at Dove House every day and now is even more equipped to support them through their recovery journey.
Tonya says, “I am very honored to be able to use this training and these certifications to be best educated on how to truly meet our Dovette’s right where they are at and help them lay the blueprints down for what their recovery looks like and means to them.”
She knows her role at Dove House is more than just a job, but women’s lives and their futures. Tonya’s commitment to Dove House’s mission is so evident by the hard work that went into becoming a certified recovery coach and the passion she brings to work every day.
