Advocating for Change: Understanding the Impact of Indiana’s Legislative Session on Mental Health and Substance Use Disorder Services

The Indiana General Assembly is currently in session. But what exactly does this mean, and how does this impact organizations like Dove House? Here’s a quick overview:

From now until mid-March, the Indiana House of Representatives and Senate will be meeting to hear and vote on legislation. This includes legislation that will affect the lives of our friends and neighbors in recovery. Representatives are currently hearing bills that may become law, and a large number of these bills have direct ties to mental and behavioral health.

So, what does that have to do with you? Everything! As an individual who shares in Dove Recovery House for Women’s mission to empower women to become substance-free, self-sufficient, and healthy, we know you understand the value of proper treatment and recovery services for people impacted by substance use disorder. Here are just a few of the bills that will have an impact on mental and behavioral health:

  • HB 1118 establishes the Indiana First Responders Mental Health Wellness Fund and program.
  • HB 1188 prohibits lifetime limitations on a Medicaid recipient receiving substance use disorder inpatient rehabilitation or treatment.
  • HB 1205 requires recovery community organizations for behavioral health recovery to be certified and meet other standards established by the division of mental health and addiction.

Several additional bills directly impact mental and behavioral health as well as individuals in recovery, and you can check out the complete list, courtesy of Mental Health America of Indiana, here
